On 2nd June 2024 at 3pm we unveiled the newest additions to Telford's Veteran Trail, it was a glorious day not just because the sun was shining but 3 of the 19 plaques belonged to our 80th Anniversary of D Day landing Veterans: competition winner Pte John Taylor RASC, along with AB Ken Lutman RN and L/Sgt Harry Bennett Coldstream Guards, which after fundraising were able to purchase the plaques.

It was an absolute honour to meet those who purchased the plaque, and their friends and family. It's this that makes TVT very special, we are for all veterans, whether you are still with us, or if they have sadly departed.

It's through the sale of these plaques we are able to donate to local Veteran's charities, and 2024 see us supporting Telford Mind & Royal Navy Breakfast Club Newport.

What made Sunday extra special was learning about our WW2 Veteran's stories, a letter from Pte John Taylor, written to his Mum & Dad on VE day. John talks his experience when hearing the war had ended whilst in Italy. He tells his mum and dad about and him and Bert enjoying the Italian wine, which flowed through the night, until they were put to bed by the Captain. The next day John & Bert stayed in bed all day ......... probably a little worse for wear....a true squaddie.

Able Seaman Ken Lutman, who took part in the D-Day Landings on HMS Lawford, taking Candian troops to Juno beach. He was asleep when a missile hit the boat, he was rescued by another ship. Ken had suffered a fractured skull and was hospitalised. Once recovered he was sent to protect the Russian convoys.

And lastly L/Sgt Harry Bennett of Battalion of Coldstream Guards, he was on active duty in Cairo, when sadly he contracted meningitis and died. Harry left behind a young wife and daughter. There isn't much information on Harry, although we know he was a army boxer.
